Visit the Cairns Performing Arts Centre

The Cairns Performing Arts Centre next to the Munro Martin Parklands is a must-visit in April as there will be two exciting shows to catch for the whole family!

On April 5 and April 6, The Sapphires – the famous musical play turned critically acclaimed movie – comes to Cairns with a brand new and updated production by original writer and director Tony Briggs. Staying true to the original themes and story but with a zesty country music twist, this revamped stage musical isn’t to be missed for those who know the story as well as those who don’t!

A touching true story with themes of identity, passion and dreams, The Sapphires follows a musical group of four women who travel the country performing and chasing their desires. The Sapphires has been a prominent musical production in Australia since its debut in 2004, and was adapted into film in 2012 to widespread critical acclaim across the country. This 2019, The Sapphires returns better than ever, and is not to be missed for all ages this autumn.

On April 13, catch one of the biggest family shows of 2019 with Celtic Illusion at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre. Led by Lord of the Dance original cast member Anthony Street, this mesmerising production that fuses Irish dance with illusion is one that will have the whole family holding on to the edge of their seats.

Boasting a stellar cast, world-class choreography and a handful of mind-blowing illusions that will dazzle and awe, Celtic Illusion – which has been successful ever since its establishment in 2011 – is all set to take Australia by storm this 2019.

Commemorate ANZAC Day in the Cairns CBD

On April 25, join a special ANZAC Day commemoration in the Cairns CBD which will take place throughout the morning.

ANZAC Day honours fallen and surviving ANZAC – Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – soldiers who fought in World War I, as well as current armed forces that continue to serve and protect. ANZAC Day has been a day of remembrance as well as a national holiday since April 25, 1916, on which annual commemorations take place all over the countries of both Australia and New Zealand.

The 103rd ANZAC Day will be commemorated in Cairns with a Dawn Parade at 4.25am from the RSL Memorial Hall to ANZAC Park, followed by a Dawn Service on Cairns Esplanade at 5.30am. There will also be a Cairns Ecumenical Church Service at Saint Monica’s Cathedral at 8.15am.

The Services Parade will involve a march at 10am from Fogarty Park. The parade will go along the Cairns Esplanade to Minnie Street and then along Grafton Street before entering the Munro Martin Parklands, where a Commemoration Service will take place inside the park at around 10.30am.

Join in the Cairns Marathon

For seasoned marathoners as well as those looking to take up a challenge in autumn, the Cairns Marathon is not to be missed!

Starting and finishing at Fogarty Park near Cairns Esplanade, the Cairns Marathon will bring in participants from all over the region for a choice of exciting distances to take on in picturesque Cairns. Categories will cover ages 17 to 70 and over with an award and product prize for each first-place runner. On top of that, each finisher will receive a 2019 medal and towel! Events will include the Channel 7 Marathon, the McDonald’s Half Marathon, 10km, 5km, and the 2km RMHCNA Family Dash – providing the perfect distance for all!
