The Cairns Airport IRONMAN 2018 Asia-Pacific Championships returns to Cairns in June. Boasting one of the most spectacular triathlon courses in the world set amongst the tropical backdrop of Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, the IRONMAN 2018 Asia-Pacific Championships is an incredible experience for both athletes and spectators alike.
Over its 7-year run the IRONMAN 2018 Asia-Pacific Championships has become one of the most esteemed triathlon racing events in Australia. The iron-distance circuit takes competitors up the Captain Cook Highway along the coastline from Cairns to Port Douglas, providing a breathtaking backdrop of World Heritage-listed rainforest, the Cairns Esplanade, and the Great Barrier Reef glittering just off the coast. The course sees the athletes complete the race in the heart of Cairns city. This will include a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km run – a gruelling yet rewarding challenge for the country’s top athletes. The IRONMAN 2018 Asia-Pacific Championships attracts only the best triathletes to compete and challenge themselves in one of Australia’s most iconic destinations, and for spectators it’s one of the most thrilling sporting events to witness.
The IRONMAN 2018 Asia-Pacific Championships presents itself as the pinnacle event of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, running from June 6 to June 11. The jam-packed festival program features the IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns, Quicksilver Reef Swim (Green Island), The Cairns Post Bright Night Run, and the McDonald’s IRONKIDS Cairns Triathlon for kids. The IRONMAN 70.3 on June 10 will see triathletes complete a lighter version of the IRONMAN Cairns, featuring a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21.1km run. The Quicksilver Reef Swim is a spectacular 1.5 and 3km swim with the Great Barrier Reef below the surface. At the Cairns Post Bright Night Run on June 8, take part in a glowing course along the Cairns foreshore! Lastly, the McDonald’s IRONKIDS Cairns Triathlon gives kids the chance to have a go at kids-only version of the IRONMAN Cairns, with a IRONKIDS finishers t-shirt and several prizes to be availed.
